Many patients who need orthodontics are looking for an aesthetically-pleasing solution that provides the positive results of traditional braces. At HLS Orthodontics, we are proud to provide the most advanced appliances and orthodontic techniques to our patients and often recommend lingual braces for treatment. This customized appliance provides fantastic results without placing appliances on the front of the teeth. Dr. Andre Haerian and Dr. Jennifer Ludwig are experts in the placement of lingual braces and love to see the results!
What are lingual braces?
Unlike traditional braces, which are attached to the front (or outside) of the teeth, lingual braces attach to the back (or inside) of the teeth. Since they are positioned behind the teeth, they stay hidden when speaking or smiling, giving lingual braces a cosmetic advantage for those who seek the benefits of braces but not the look. Most patients who are candidates for traditional metal braces find that they are also candidates for lingual braces.
How do lingual braces work?
Lingual braces function in the same manner as traditional braces, but the placement and type of brackets differ. Lingual brackets are placed on the back side of the teeth and are not visible from the front. Just like traditional braces, lingual braces are composed of four parts:
- Bracket, the metal piece attached to the tooth and archwire.
- Bond, an orthodontic adhesive that holds the bracket to the tooth.
- Archwire, the wire that runs through each bracket and across the entire upper or lower arch. It is what moves the teeth through the applied pressure.
- Ligature elastic, the rubber band that wraps around each bracket to hold the archwire in place.
To begin the process, we will take impressions of your teeth and palate, which we send to a dental laboratory to customize the metal brackets that will fit your particular mouth structure. Our practice uses state-of-the-art 3D imaging technology to create the most accurate impressions possible. With this technology, we can avoid using uncomfortable tray-and-putty impressions.
Your orthodontist will cement the brackets into place, which are not removable until your treatment is over. Lingual braces work to realign your teeth by slowly exerting pressure on the teeth. This pressure is gentle but constant, and over time, it works to shift your teeth into proper alignment.
